Each to his own, but some of the men depicted here do not look healthy. The Ancient Greeks, as shown in their sculptures of Olympic athletes, provided a vision to young men of something more attainable and sustainable.

Very nice muscularity on all of the men. I'm assuming that this is pre-steroid use. Does anyone know if this is true?

The AI is fake and in no way historical. A damaged photo tells more about history than an AI ever can. Don't use AI you will lose your creditability.

🇫🇴🇬🇧 Hi Alan, apart from you physically buying images do you use free access archives on other sources. I only ask as your images DON'T usually appear on the countless other vintage sites around. I often see the same images posted on several other YT chanels as I guess the images can't be copyrighted as the original owners are probably deceased etc. I hope this isnt a prickly area to you. These films are really interesting. I keep looking at the navy ones to see if I can find my uncle James Barbour. He was a navy man on a small ship. I think that was with the aircraft carriers The only other person in our family that was in the Navy was my brother, but he was in the medical core and I told him he probably would not ever travel on ship because he was too tall to fit .

Those were neat pictures to see, my father had similar ones in his scrapbook from ww2.

Male children having their own bedrooms became common only in the 1960s. Even in Leave it to Beaver from the 1960s, Wally and the Beev slept in the same bedroom. Prior to World War II, the majority of male children shared a bed with other males.

Ar 5:37 this is a rather typical shot on navy ships: the tallest and shortest sailors on the ship photographed together.

Judging by the pictures, I notice that even back then before the "obesity epidemic" , a lot of people weren't in all that great shape. Just skinny or skinny fat..poor muscle tone. Not being critical but people often rave about how in shape we used to be. Not reality.

I rode on that ship in 1957 from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor when my dad transferred to Honolulu. Hula girls met us. What a rush for a 11 year boy, 5 days of 24 hour food and movies, shuffleboard and wandering around. I had the upper bunk with my sister in the lower one. There were many civilians on board with families. Not a cruise ship, it really moved in the water and I couldn’t eat the first day. Wish I could do it again - I wish I could live in Hawaii in the 50s again.

Some proud and hard men there. Some gay I reckon. Handsome and beefy.

Looks like Allis-Chalmers HD series and Caterpillar crawler tractors. My uncle was a Seabee in the Pacific WW2, he said he ran those types...

🇫🇴🇬🇧 Aloha Andy great theme to cover. Lots of archives abound of naval/marine/army guys but not so many about USAF and our RAF. I wonder if the authorities of the times took pictorial history of the nose art and cockpit art too. It would be great if there were images of the two you mentioned. In the RAF the number of kills to a plane were allowed(?) to be painted on the fuselage. Still I guess there are groups, society's and individuals who have an interest in this art and it's history. Honestly, most of the time I come across the word 'woke ' the person is using it to mean 'anything I happen to dislike at this particular moment' or 'anything to the left of where I happen to be in the left-right continuum, or some combination thereof. Personally, I won't be surprised if it starts being used like 'social justice warrior' i.e. mostly ironically/sarcastically... to denote a person who isn't too terribly concerned with social justice, but wears it as a cloak to obscure the real goal to crusade, grind an axe, finger wag, etc. And 90% of the time I hear 'woke' it reminds me of a kid who's learned a new swear word. He uses it every other sentence but since he doesn't know what it actually means half the time the usage is non-sensical. and just like a kid with a new swear word, if you ask him to define it you just get prevarication. What's needed is a dictionary definition.

The idea of skinny dipping nowadays fills most with dread and anxiety. The advent of feminism, gay visibility and puritanical attitudes towards sex and the body have definitely made us fearful.

Whether you're straight or gay shouldn't matter anymore today, because people are too fixated on it, so you can generally say that men are more social and less judgmental towards each other when they're naked. It just makes everyone equal, which is why men are nicer to each other in the shower or sauna and they're less likely to body-shame each other than women. Just my opinion.

I can't help put notice that Nick seemed to have a collection of very woof-worthy friends. Thank you.

The photos on this posting are 14:38 all so interesting to me. I was born on an Army Airforce Base (as it was then called) in 1945. Aside from seeing a few photos of that time, I really didn't know much. Thanks for all the pictures and the period music. All of your postings are very nformative and interesting.
